As someone who has worked as a virtual healthcare assistant for over 3 years, I can tell you this is the best job I have ever had.

There is more experience required for a position like this, rather than a regular VA position simply because there is medical knowledge required for this line of work.

It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with medical terminologies, healthcare procedures, and the technology platforms used in the industry. You’ll also need to make sure you are maintaining confidentiality and complying with healthcare regulations, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in the United States or the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) in Ontario, Canada.
You don’t necessarily need a degree or a certification to be a healthcare virtual assistant but past experience is helpful!

- Administrative Tasks: Your key responsibilities include scheduling appointments, managing emails, and organizing patient records. You ensure the seamless operation of front-desk activities and are often the first point of contact for patients.

Your education should ideally begin with a high school diploma or equivalent. Many practitioners need this at a MINIMUM.

I have a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Business Administration in Marketing Advance Diploma which is relevant to the field since I also pair social media marketing with my VA business.

I always recommend that those looking to add additional skills to their resume take an online course. They can teach you things quickly and concisely that you may not otherwise have been able to learn.

To start out most people will be freelancing on places like Fiverr and Upwork. I found my first VA job on Indeed and then networked from there. There are opportunities in many places but you need to put yourself out there in order to find them.
This is why it is incredibly important to network because your clients likely know others who are in the field and can help you find other clients so you can turn this into a full-time job.
Setting Competitive Hourly Rates
Determining your hourly rate is important but it can also be difficult.
You should always research the current market rates experienced freelancers in your field are charging. Then, factor in your level of expertise, the complexity of the tasks involved, and the average rates found on talent marketplaces.
Be realistic and competitive without underselling your capabilities. Here’s an example to illustrate an approach to setting your rates:

To ensure long-lasting relationships, prioritize communication; be responsive and ensure you understand client needs. Create a system for regular check-ins, and use feedback to fine-tune your approach.
- Regular Check-ins: Schedule weekly or bi-weekly calls to discuss ongoing needs and updates. Even after working with my clients for 4 years, I still have weekly meetings.
- Active Listening: Pay close attention to your client’s concerns and work on providing those solutions.
